Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake is the winter wonderland of my dreams. I think it’s only snow free for about 4 months of the year. As you’ll see below, even a visit in early May yields a ton of snow. The park starts to clear the road around the lake typically at the end of April, and prior to heading to the park I called and asked about the conditions. Ten feet of snow on the roads still!

Due to the aforementioned snow, my ability to travel around the lake was a little limited. With a longer trip, one that I’d love to do in the future, I’d definitely get some cross country skis so I could cover more distance. Most of the park’s recreation actually revolves around winter sports. However, if you find yourself here in the summer during a toasty day, there is a spot you can jump into this volcanic crater lake!

When visiting this park, just be aware that this place is IN THE WILDERNESS. Which is awesome, but if you want any type of cell service or amenities (outside of the lodge), your closest bet just for a small lodge and general store is 30 minutes away. If you’re flying in or out to visit this park, Medford is about an hour and a half away, with a decent sized town and a good airport.
